Three years

May 16th, 2012

I’ve been a walking heartache, I’ve made a mess of me. The person that I’ve been lately ain’t who I wanna be.
But you stay here right beside me and watch as the storm blows through
And I need you
.
GolfCourse-027

Cause God gave me you for the ups and downs,
God gave me you for the days of doubt
And for when I think I lost my way, there are no words here left to say, it’s true

God gave me you

LawQuad-015

There’s more here than what we’re seeing, a divine conspiracy
That you, an angel lovely could somehow fall for me
You’ll always be love’s great martyr and I’ll be the flattered fool
And I need you

God gave me you for the ups and downs
God gave me you for the days of doubt
And for when I think I lost my way
There are no words here left to say, it’s true

God gave me you

LawQuad-123

On my own I’m only half of what I could be
I can’t do without you.
We are stitched together
And what love has tethered I pray we never undo.

Cause God gave me you for the ups and downs
God gave me you for the days of doubt

God gave me you for the ups and downs
God gave me you for the days of doubt
And for when I think I lost my way
There are no words here left to say, it’s true
God gave me you, gave me you.
He gave me you.

Happy 3rd anniversary, Merrick. I have always loved you… and I always will.

Year 2 in review

May 26th, 2011

My better half asked me to do a review of our 2nd year together (omg he asked me?! He DOES care!), so here we go:

We made it through the year. We’re still crazy about each other. We’re both still alive (and only came close to killing each other a few times).

The end

I’ve heard the first 2 years in marriage are the hardest, and I mentioned how completely untrue that was for the first year, but it seemed to be true for year 2, cuz this past year was a lot harder than last year. There were a number of reasons that made it more difficult, one main one was me starting grad school. That put a lot of financial stressors on us (my part time pay check and my full time tuition bill are NOT getting along!) and it also forced us to be more flexible in our roles. Previously, I was working full time, but I still had 4 days off per week and was able to take care of the household duties on my days off – the cooking, the cleaning, grocery shopping, Target runs, etc. Adding grad school to my plate gave me 5-6 full days + studying and left me exhausted and with no free time. So Merrick picked up a lot of the housekeeping duties (doodie… hehe). So those new roles were something we both had to adjust to. He still works his M-F 9-5 and now has to come home and figure out what we’re going to eat, and make sure there’s clean dishes to eat off of. And I had to adjust to realizing not doing those tasks does NOT make me a crappy wife.

We also adjusted to having a roommate living with us for about 6 months. I didn’t write much about it, but it was difficult. We really enjoyed our time with him and our friendship, but it’s hard once you’re used to certain things, ya know? Merrick and I are pretty attuned to each others idiosyncrasies and habits, and adding another person to the mix in close quarters can make for some hard times.

But, again, we came out on top of a difficult year and we’re stronger for it. Plus, year 3 has started out very well with a (now) healthy husband and the end of this school year in sight. Plus fondue dates and SoCal sunshine. Baby, year 3 gone be the best year YET!

So here’s our year in review:

May 2010
We started the year with our anniversary weekend on Catalina Island and then came home and said goodbye to our South African friends, Celo and Danai at Mozambique, oh and I had red/purple/crazy hair! (obviously my hair color is monumental in our marriage…)

June 2010
Of course the highlight of June was our trip to India

It’s like Where’s Waldo, but it’s Where’s the Whitey?… Didja find her? Here’s a hint, she’s the one who’s skin is translucent on the end

July 2010
We made it back State Side and to the Atlantic for my family vacay and to celebrate my Mamma’s big birthday!
NCfam

August 2010
Aaaannnd she’s blonde again!
August was a fun, busy, traveling month… Well obviously August 5th is a National Holiday and of course the wedding of my brother-in-law to his lovely wife (and that awesome party they threw!) and then there was the trip to San Fran… it was a good month!

September 2010
September saw the start of my Masters program, which similar to marriage, has been one of the hardest things I’ve done but still one of the best decisions I’ve made. Then to give me a break from drowning in hypertension and diabetes, my college girlfriends visited me!

October 2010

Beach Bonfires, Lakers games and back to Michigan for some family time

November 2010
Despite being too busy to breathe and still getting used to being back in school, I had plenty to be thankful for. Friends birthday parties and colder California weather found us in November. We celebrated being married for 18 months and the “Mansgiving” at our house

December 2010
We made it back to the Frozen Tundra just in time for the freeze. Remind me WHY on earth we keep going back there every time it’s COLD? But we had a white Christmas and were able to spend some quality time with both our fams.
IMG_4863

January 2011
We rang in the new year with my baby bro visiting , then we finished January off by “winning” the pajama party contest… Cuz who would pass this up?
IMG_4987

February 2011
Hmm… pretty much a nothing month. Meh.

March 2011
We went up to LA, then up to San Francisco and Merrick’s parents dropped by! It was a busy month – finishing school and traveling, then starting school again. No rest for the wicked weary, right?

San Fransicso bus shot… which woulda been cool circa 1999 when MySpace was cool.
IMG_5324

April 2011
I watched as my best friend married her best friend in the Lone Star State.

A gold fire hydrant. Only in Laguna Beach, and only cuz I don’t have any good pictures of us from April. But seriously? A gold fire hydrant?!
IMG_5512

And that brings us right back full circle, back to where we started, and where we start every year – May 16th, where we wipe the slate clean and start over with full hearts and big dreams. It’s where we mark our growth as husband and wife, but never forget how it all began…

Part 2 of forever

May 16th, 2011

Today is our anniversary. Our “forever” is only 2 short years in, but it still feels like it’s been forever. We had some grand romantic plans this weekend and today, but those are all shot out the door.

I’m learning to be more flexible in “forever.”

My poor husband has been laid out on our couch all weekend, feverish and sick. And I’ve been feverish with studying for my huge exam this week. His body is worn out and my mind is worn out. We’re quite the romantic couple this anniversary.

This is the “…in sickness and in health part.”

So although we’re not having our grand, romantic date for our 2nd anniversary, we’re still celebrating. But it’s not the huge gestures and flowers and fancy dinners this year. It’s the Motrin and Gatorade in the middle of the night. It’s the hug when I’m about to poke my eyeballs out from studying. It’s our feet still touching at night. It’s knowing we made it through another year. It’s being stronger and more in love for it. It’s celebrating another step in our “forever.”

And the 2nd anniversary is “cotton,”which this year means doing the laundry for him after he couldn’t keep down another BRAT diet dinner. It’s sleeping in the cotton t shirt instead of the sexy sweet things bought specially for this occasion.

So here’s to finishing up another year, and to starting a new one. Here’s to a deeper love, a more comfortable love, a better love. And although sometimes I miss the beginning infatuation where we couldn’t keep our hands off each other and couldn’t stand to be apart, this year was better. We learned how much we can take. We learned how to love each other better. We became more of a partnership, really picking each other up when the other one was down.

So although this anniversary isn’t as glamorous as the first, there isn’t a place I’d rather be than where we are now. We’ll get through the sickness, get through the stress and we’ll be better for it.

Happy Anniversary Merrick. I love you more than you know.

We survived the year!

May 20th, 2010

…without killing each other! Can I please get a standing ovation for that? Seriously, that was an accomplishment in itself this year!

Like I’ve mentioned, I consider my wedding anniversary to be a huge milestone. And similar to looking back at the end of a calendar year (although that is significantly less of a milestone than our anniversary…however, it could be argued they are similar – each comes around once a year, and there (God willing) will always be another one next year…)…forgive my tangent… anyway, upon reflecting back on our first year of marriage, here are some highlights:

May 2009: When it all began…
LawQuad-044

May 2009 (part II): Part I of the 3 week, 2 part honeymoon in Hawaii
IMG_1324

June 2009: Honeymoon Part II, Alaskan cruise
IMG_1398

July 2009: Our first trip back home as a married couple, our first visitor since we’ve been married (holla to BMak!), the Bro has a layover at LAX and we hang at Redondo Beach.

August 2009: My birthday! Vegas for the bday (NOT San Fran as thought…)
IMG_1807

September 2009: Football season started! We met our great friend, Casey. Nick’s bomb wig party!
IMG_1821

October 2009: The BIL came out to visit. Went to Universal Studios for the first time (bought year long passes and have YET to go back!). Halloween was a rockin good time, met our good friend Rachel!

November 2009: Out with our peeps (and please note that this IS a big deal because we hardly ever go out, we old!). Vegas to see Jersey Boys. Thanksgiving dinner hosted at Club M (aka our casa)

December 2009: My SCB’s Quarter-Of-A-Century celebration station! My first Christmas back in the Frozen Tundra in years. The beautiful wedding of Maria and Mike. And of course finishing up the year with Jason’s New Years Eve Party.
IMG_2375

January 2010: The Cruise, obviously :)

February 2010: The only pictures I have from this month are of car stuff that the Mister’s been working on…

March 2010: Celo’s birthday party. Meeting Tom Arnold. Wine Tasting. The Mamma Bear visits.
IMG_3284

April 2010: Our first Easter in the Frozen Tundra. TBell and 40’s.

May 2010: Home again, home again, jiggy jig jig. And of course, our one year anniversary and anniversary trip.
IMG_3530

And that brings us back here. They say the first year of marriage is the hardest. Well if that’s the hardest, the next 74 years are going to be a cake walk! Cuz honestly, of course we had our hard times, but it’s never hard loving your best friend, the person who makes you the happiest and is always looking out for you. (Ok, sometimes it is hard to love that person, but the year still wasn’t “hard.”)

Thanks for a wonderful first year my SCB! Can’t wait to see what the future brings us!

First Anniversary Shenanigans… part III

May 19th, 2010

Your final installment of The First Anniversary Shenanigans. We here at merrickandkatie.com appreciate your patience and your staying/reading power. At the end of this trip, please stop by the front desk to pick up your free gift… (spoiler alert: free gift = a shout out from me on the blog!)

This one’s gonna be a picture documentary… although we didn’t take too many pictures because we were, umm… Busy talking.… or something like that. :)

First off the boat ,and man we be parched! What a better way to quench your thirst than MARGARITAS!
IMG_3514

Just a typical pic of us… crazy. Although these kind of pics are not the prettiest or nicest, these are the ones that I’ll remember when I look back. I remember the great times of us just being US. No frills, no make up, no expectations, no nothin’. Just me and my mayyyyn.
IMG_3526

Our tour to the “Airport in the Sky”… 2100 feet above sea level and with the world’s longest runway
IMG_3569

He smuggled some drinky drinks! We had gone wine tasting a couple months ago and really enjoyed this pineapple champagne. So one day while I was working, my wonderful SCB drove the hour back down to Temecula to pick this up for us! What a sneakster! He’s so sweet :) Unfortunately, it wasn’t as good as we remember! But we had fun with it anyway
IMG_3588

So on our actual anniversary (which was the 16th if anyone’s paying attention…) we went to a really nice Italian dinner, dressed up to the 9’s, all grown up, responsible and mature and of course we don’t take any pictures. So then we come back and drink our smuggled champagne in sweats/no shirt, toothpick and in plastic glasses. Cuz we’re high class like that.
IMG_3589

So there ya have it. The mystery of the First Anniversary, unveiled! Stay tuned for some more marriage and anniversary reflections. Until next time, Stay Classy, San Diego!

First Anniversary Shenanigans… part II

May 18th, 2010

…So after guessing and guessing and guessing (wrongly) every time, we were finally ready to embark on the mystery trip Friday morning. I had no idea at this point where we were headed, and wasn’t even sure if we were driving or flying. I got an email clue from Merrick’s coworker saying, “So I hear you’re heading to the desert this weekend.” This then got me back to thinking “Vegas.” Although all the clues didn’t line up for me… then I got an email later from same said coworker that was, “Please disregard anything I’ve said and still act surprised.” To me that meant that oops, the coworker spilled the beans to me! Ha, little did I know… Turns out, both those emails were ploys from my husband and the coworker… Grrr… they got me again!

So we’re in the car and I get this:

IMG_3591

…paper gift right? So I just read it like a fool, smile, tear up a little bit at the sweetness of my husband… then continue to question him about our destination.

He tells me, “It was just in your hands…”

So I grab my letter again and realize (with a little bit of help from the Mister) that it’s an acrostic poem, and that we’re going to CATALINA! It finally all made sense! We had both been there briefly on our cruise in January, it’s cool at night, we stayed in a hotel (vs someone elses place or a cruise), and there are no cars allowed on the island (except for locals and there’s an 18 year waiting list!) so we had to walk everywhere! The 3 oz liquid thing, similar to the desert clue, was just a ruse.

Another “myspace” picture (we’re getting good at those… thing is, no one’s ever around to take a pic of us 2!). Pre trip (and pre KNOWING where we’re going!) pic!
IMG_3510

and just to keep it spicy, more to come!!…

First Anniversary Shenanigans… part I

May 17th, 2010

So as promised, here’s an update an the anniversary SURPRISE I teased you all with in the last post…

Merrick had the whole weekend planned, so I claimed Thursday as my day. So Thursday I made him a really nice dinner – Caesar salad with homemade dressing (delish!), chicken cordon bleu (succulent!), green beans (with a killer sauce!), passion fruit sorbet (sweet!), cheesecake brownies (his 2 favorite desserts combined into one incredible dessert), and a personalized bottle of wine with our picture on it that we received for the wedding. (Can you tell I’m selling myself, making up for this post ).

So the first anniversary is traditionally supposed to be a “paper” gift… whatever that means. So by “paper,” I took it upon myself to decorate our apartment with post its of 365 reasons why I love you (him, not you… although I’m sure I love you too… although I can’t be certain). It took forever and was a lot harder than I thought. I ran out of time but ended up with 229 post its around my apartment (I’m slowly adding the other 136 posts when he’s not looking) It looked AWESOME! This pictures here don’t really do it justice, cuz a picture never can truly capture everything. But let me just tell you, my SCB LOVED it! LOVED it, loved it, LOVED it!! And that, of course, made me the happiest little bear there ever was!

What the SCB saw on our door before he came in…
IMG_3503

A few reasons…
IMG_3595

and a few more…
IMG_3596

…Imagine these post its x like 200 more. It looked pretty awesome. And we of course dressed up for our pre-anniversary dinner, so we had to capture that…

IMG_3508

Now his paper gift, and the trip… well those are to be continued…
