Caribbean Cruisin Part IV

April 12th, 2012

Day 6 - St. Thomas, and my absolute favorite! There actually wasn’t an island we didn’t like, but St. Thomas took the cake for being the one we loved the most. It was so beautiful, lush, welcoming, friendly, warm, etc. We decided we’d come back to St. Thomas by itself one day… it’s on the ever growing travel list. We started out the day with a rainforest tour then stopped by Blackbeard’s Castle to say hi
DSCN0529

But the highlight of the day/trip was the underwater scooter adventure. We took a bumpy, wavy boat ride somewhere in the middle of the ocean and got ready to do some underwater breathing
DSCN0571

After a little instruction, they assigned us scooters and we were on our way! We went 10 feet down and our ears popped all the way down
DSCN0612

It was so awesome! We were close enough to touch the fish. Plus checking out everyone’s teeny heads in the bubbles attached to normal size bodies looked hilarious.
DSCN0618

We finished up the day with the daily bottle of wine, some martini’s and some late night packing and ready to head home the next day. But before we boarded the plane the next morning, we did one last pit stop in San Juan, Puerto Rico – the Bacardi tour! San Juan is home of the world’s largest Bacardi distillery, and we love us some rum so we couldn’t pass it up!
DSCN0710

We found out the reason the bat is the label’s trademark is because Mrs. Bacardi found BATS and (bat poo) in their barn where they were making the rum. In their culture, bats meant health, wealth and happiness so they stuck with the bat theme. In my culture finding bats in the barn means you throw out whatever you’re making in there and bleach that bad boy down. Nasty. Thankfully, there were no bats in the distillery.
DSCN0735

He’s got the weight of the world on his shoulders… I think he needs a drink!
DSCN0755

After a few sips of rum punch, we said goodbye to Puerto Rico, to the cruise and to spring break. It was time to head home and although the trip was amazing and much needed, we were also ready to be home. Sleep in our own bed (by the way cruise beds with 2 twins pushed together just doesn’t work. Somehow I always ended up in the crack), do some laundry, and even eat healthy again. My body was craving some veggies. We made it home late Saturday night and kept Sunday as a nothing day, just to relish in the last relaxation day.

It’s sad to think that’s my LAST spring break ever (until I get my doctorate. Ha. ha ha ha ha ha… oh I crack myself up). But even if we never have a scheduled spring/summer/winter break ever again, you can sure bet we’ll be back on the boat soon enough! Those little vacations really are great for our relationship, but we realized, our relationship has been great all along. We don’t need to go anywhere to show each other we love each other. We don’t need to do crazy excursions and drink fancy bottles of wine. We just need to enjoy each other daily and get drunk on our love (too cheesy? Sorry (I’m not sorry), that’s just us). Although sunshine, wine and beautiful places sure doesn’t hurt at all…

Thanks for a wonderful vacation, SCB. I love you to the moon and back

Caribbean Cruisin Part III

April 10th, 2012

Day 4 – the beautiful Grenada. Our excursion for the day was kayaking and we realized rowing for multiple hours wasn’t our favorite activity. Someone in the group said “a way to see if you’ve got a good marriage is to see if you can row together” which was funny because there were definite moments of oars clinking and “Left! No, Right!” outbursts as we made our way through the water.
DSCN0378

I told Merrick when we got to the turn around point that we’d have to do this all over again. And man, our arms and shoulders were BURNING from the workout! No need for the gym that day, we got our strength training in by rowing for 2 hours. After the excursion, we did some shopping and some more rum punch’ing and set sail for St. Thomas.

Day 5 - Our only day at sea and we were ready for a break. We slept in till 10am and then spent the whole day outside, reading, talking and just hanging.
DSCN0449

We finally got out of our swimsuits and met up with our seat mates for an “Around the world” wine tasting where we sampled California, French and Italian wines for an hour. After a lot of wine and a lot of sun, we called it an early night and lounged for the rest of our evening. I caught up on the Kardashians and Merrick caught up on Katniss and Peeta (we’re both a little behind the times…)

Up next – St. Thomas!

Caribbean Cruisin Part II

April 9th, 2012

Day 2 - St. Kitt’s, another USVI (United States Virgin Island) started off on ATV’s! I’d never ridden them before and my little scaredy-cat self was a little nervous. But the promise of rum punch and the beach at the end, plus the beautiful view made me put my big girl panties on and rock.
DSCN0167

Turns out, I loved the ATV’s and have a lead foot! Our instructors would only let us go to 3rd gear though, so I couldn’t zoom-zoom like I wanted to. Riding the 4-wheeler was so fun, but we got so dusty. There was grit everywhere, in my mouth, on my hands and there was no clean place on my shirt to wipe off. Nasty.
DSCN0189

Thankfully the next stop was the beach. Nothing like a salt water shower to not feel gritty anymore… but I just counted it as natural exfoliation to make my skin baby smooth. :)
DSCN0214

Day 2 ended with (what became) a traditional bottle of wine, and walks and talks on the upper deck at night. Those are the days I’ll remember – good wine buzz, beautiful ocean, warm breeze and hanging with my best bud talking about our future and laughing at every silly thing we can think of.
DSCN0261

Day 3 - Dominica and river tubing!
DSCN0284

We went through the wild rapids and somehow by holding on for dear life, I managed to not flip over. I don’t think the Hus was as lucky… but I definitely did leave some skin on some of the rocks. Man those sharp rocks right through the tube on your tooshie hurt! After about an hour in the tube, the tour guide pulled us all out and we headed to the next stop – the rainforest and fountain of youth.
DSCN0305

We found the fountain of youth – the Emerald Waterfall. It was beautiful and so cold and refreshing, I already felt 10 years younger! (And the photobomb behind us is about 10 years younger too)
DSCN0314

More underwater shots. These still crack me up every time.
DSCN0325
Hey! Eyes open and an attempt at a smile – that’s picture success!
DSCN0327

We wrapped up our Dominica day at the Martini bar back on the ship
DSCN0360

The martinis were followed by a bottle of wine at dinner and a hilarious dinner conversation with our wonderful seat mates and an equally hilarious server who gave us a “special surprise” – Nothing! (likely made more entertaining due to several adult beverages)
DSCN0363

And of course we finished off the night strolling the upper decks outside… Another great night with my boyfriend.

Caribbean Cruisin Part I

April 7th, 2012

So we’re back on solid ground after a week long Caribbean cruise. This is our 3rd cruise together and they just keep getting better! We’ve done Celebrity now twice and LOVE them! The service, the decor, the ambiance…

I don’t know how to break up the whole week and some 500+ pictures, so we’ll go day by day… by day by day (name that movie) in some picture/word combo format. Who knows how many days I’ll actually get through… especially when I already have a paper due Tuesday and this weekend is busy with Easter things…

Anyway, on to the show!

After a long, long, long day of travel (I hate travel day. Blah), we finally boarded our Celebrity ship, the Summit, and immediately got into vacation mode with a  mint mojito for each of us.
IMG_7434

After a refreshing beverage at noon (hey, it’s vacation! And It’s 5:00 somewhere!) and a refreshing nap, the SCB was a stud and convinced me to hit the ships gym before we set sail. We had said we’d work out 3x during the week… so we were already off to a great start on the first day. After our sweat session, it was already dinner time… seriously WHERE did the day go? (that became a recurrent question throughout the week)

We got our dirty selves cleaned up in time to meet our seatmates for the week. Now we’ve learned the assigned seating is kind of like dorm roommates – either you become besties and really love each other, or you get a dud. We got duds on our honeymoon cruise, so we weren’t exactly excited about the possibility of that happening again. Thankfully, our table was incredible! 4 other people, 2 of whom we became very close to throughout the week.

You KNOW you’ll be good friends when they graciously take on the task of our dinner photographer, and even offer to re-take if you don’t like it!
IMG_7436

The following morning was St. Croix and we were ready for adventure – a jeep adventure! We piled in the back of an open jeep for our off-roading, praying-to-Jesus-I-wouldn’t-fall-out excursion.
DSCN0007

After jeep-ing up and down crazy, muddy trails and hills, we made it down to a “secret” beach – the tide pools. It was the islands best kept secret because the only way to access the tide pools was through the crazy off-roading.
DSCN0051

We scaled the rocks and jumped in the tide pool… with our tennies on. And Merrick totally WINS because he had told me to pack my running kicks plus my old running shoes. Dummy me just thought I’d need one pair of tennis shoes… which would have worked fine, except when we have to jump in the water with your one pair of tennies on… (needless to say, we didn’t make it to the gym that night so my shoes could dry)
DSCN0064

Playing with the underwater camera – I think underwater pics are terrible and hilarious
DSCN0059

After an amazing dip in the pools, we headed to get the infamous Caribbean Rum Punch – Deeeelish! No documentation of the punch – it was downed too quickly. But there is documentation of the infamous Mamawana shot, which is the local moonshine that the locals claimed would cure ANY ailment! And it’s called “Mamawana” because a few shots of this and it’ll “make ya mamma wanna…”
DSCN0142

Fortunately (or unfortunately…) we didn’t have enough to “cure” anything (or maybe it’s just a matter of “forgetting” your ailments while you drink…?) and we made it back in time to clean up and walk around the cute city for a while. There were a number of liquor stores right next to each other offering samples of rum punch and Merrick asked one woman if the next door neighbor’s store was good or bad for her business. The woman went into a tirade about how terrible the other store owner was and then gave us cheaper drinks to entice us to go to her store. Hey, I’m sold!

Back at the ranch – our ship!

DSCN0150

We finished up our first day with a bottle of wine and formal night! And to bed early for the next adventure…

A Fair Day

August 16th, 2011

On Saturday I cashed in one of my birthday presents – tickets to the fair! Casey, Merrick and I braved the traffic and the parking for some fatty foods and some nausea-inducing spinny rides for the best day ever!

And look how cute the twins are! (unplanned, I swear)
IMG_5911

I was so excited and only a little overwhelmed going in because I’ve never been to a fair before (what?!) and there was just SO MUCH to see and do! Where do we even start?!
IMG_5913

To keep from eating a weeks worth of calories in one day, we decided to split everything. The first thing we got was a mile long sausage… which was not a mile long. False advertising. After that guy settled, we headed to the rides! Most of the rides had a “no single riders” rule which meant one of us had to sit out every time, bummer. So Merrick and I headed to the “roller coaster” which wasn’t quite the speed demon we thought it’d be and was a little more rickety and painful than we would’ve liked. But isn’t that the best part of fairs? While the Hus and I rode away, Casey stood guard while holding his man purse, aka “Murse” (yes, it is the same word used to describe a male nurse too)
IMG_5915

The other best part of fairs – the pig races! We rooted for the purple guy – Natalie Porkman, who unfortunately got smoked. But we did get a “Free bacon!” coupon after… which I think was sure to include Natalie Porkman. They mentioned something about the losers “retiring” heh heh heh… well, nice knowing you Natalie, you still coming for brunch on Sunday?
IMG_5928

After a rousing race, it was time for fair food #2 – chili cheese fries as big as my face. Looked like we were eating baby poop… but good! Once that settled… if ya know what I mean… we decided to take a trip to the Michigan, the Frozen Tundra – aka the Ice Museum! It was FREEZING in there, which was a nice change from the 80 degree weather outside, but it was only nice for like 5 minutes. Then it started reminding me of Michigan at Christmastime. Except in shorts and a tank top. But the ice sculptures were pretty awesome… even if I only glanced by them as I ran towards the exit door.
Me and The SCB’s stunt double
IMG_5931

After a few beers for him, I finally convinced the SCB to go all romantic on me and ride the couple swings. He does love me!
Flying high!
IMG_5971

We called it a day after all our strenuous exercise (walking for 6 hours does do a number on ya…)to sit down for a home cooked meal… Deep fried cheesecake and a Butterfinger stuffed jalapeno over a bed of churros.

After I diagnosed us all with diabetes and heart failure, we headed home to a chill night to complete the obese, sedentary lifestyle by watching multiple episodes of Arrested Development. Best fatty day ever.

Les Miserables

July 26th, 2011

Remember when I bought the Hus tix to see Les Mis a couple months ago? Well Sunday we finally saw the show.

The day sort of got away from us and by the time we realized it, we were heading to the gym at 3.15pm and had to head for LA by 4.30/4.45ish. Which, if anyone knows me, knows that is NOT enough time for a decent work out PLUS shower, shave my legs, do my hair, put on my face, etc. We split from the gym around 3.45 and it was pronto time to get ready. Unfortunately in a time crunch like that, the legs were left unshaven. Oh well, ya win some, ya lose some. At least I had time for everything else. We got our fancy pants on, jammed to Les Mis on Pandora and made our way up to downtown LA to the Ahmanson theater.

IMG_5829

Our tickets were center about 1/3 of the way back – perfect, except we were separated by about 8 people. Thankfully we were able to get there early and bat the eyelashes and convince the other show go-ers in our row to slide over one measly seat to allow the lovebirds to sit next to each other. That was a huge blessing because we were worried people wouldn’t be willing to slide over for us, but everyone was really friendly. Plus I was able to enjoy the show that much more by having my arm candy by my side. And being able to see his reactions as the story unfolded in his first time viewing eyes was amazing to watch too.
IMG_5831

This was my 3rd (or 4th…?) time seeing Les Mis and it gets me every time, and this time was no exception. It was incredible. The music, the story, the love, ah… I generally don’t cry in movies or shows (ironic because I cry for pretty much any other reason), but I definitely got choked up a few times during the show.

I’m so grateful I have my PIC (Partner in crime) that I can drag to all these black tie events and pretend to be cultured by seeing fancy pants Broadway shows. It’s become kind of a tradition to see at least one per year… I already can’t wait till next years show, whatever it may be!

Post Op Update

June 30th, 2011

So peeps, I have new eyeballs. I can seeeeee!

This is how it all went down…

Monday afternoon they took me back while the Hus waited patiently playing angry birds. I got another complete eye exam, just for one last check. Then a Doc (not THE doc doing the surgery) came in for 0.6seconds said I’m coo’ and left. There was a lot of down time that I kept myself busy with reading smutty magazines. After finishing about 10 articles (approx 15 minutes later? It’s just an approximation… depends on how into the pictures and articles I am…), my new best friend brought me some Xanax. Ah my sweet friend Xanax… and led me to a dark, cozy comfy room and told me to chill for half hour.

I almost fell asleep when I barely heard my name being called and then the freakout set in. This last room is THE room. Where I could either wake up with new eyeballs, no eyeballs, or not wake up at all. I was going to back out at that moment but then thought, who needs eyeballs anyway? Plus if I don’t wake up, my life insurance policy would make Merrick debt free. Let’s get this thing started!

The right eye went first and it was teeny bit painful when they did some eye suctioning (really? eyes need suctioning too? who knew!). I told him it hurt and he put more numbing drops in which helped a lot. I didn’t even feel the left eye because of all the numbing goodies. There was one part when he was working on my right eye that everything was black. My left eye was covered, so of course that was black, but I was very aware of my right eye being propped open and I could see NOTHING. Thankfully, I’d been warned about that and it lasted for less than 5 seconds. I didn’t have the temporary blindness with the left eye, I think because the cover slipped off my right eye so I could see something and my brain compensated for the lack of vision in the left.

Besides the brief pain in my right eye, the thing I liked least was when the laser was going. You can hear the buzz of the laser which sounded like a saw, and I could smell the cautery. Literally burning my eyeballs and I’m smelling burnt cornea. Gross.

The whole procedure took about 20 minutes and I could see right away. I came home, took the 2nd sweet sweet Xanax they gave me, wore some super cool safety goggles and passed out from 6pm-6am. I woke up once at 4.45am and looked across at the clock and could SEE! For the first time in nearly 20 years I can see. My post op appointment was at 8am the next morning and I’ve got 20/15 vision. Boo yah.

Now I’m a couple days out and I’m starting to get bored at home. I can’t work out. I can’t wear eye make up (hence I’m not going out). I can’t watch tv for too long. I can’t be on the computer too long. I can’t read for too long. What am I supposed to doooooo? Needless to say, my fridge is stocked with new meals and my house is spotless. I get headaches at the end of the day from doing too much of the aforementioned forbidden things and my eyes are itchy/dry, I’m also a little light sensitive and am the cool cat who wears sunglasses inside… all of which is normal. Now I have to be diligent about my eye drops for the next couple months. 4 sets of drops 4x/day. And the drops spill out of my eyes and make me all crusty eye. And you can’t rub the crust out. Gross.

All in all, this was one of the best decisions I’ve made. For those lucky peeps who have perfect vision (ahem, Judester!), you’ll never quite understand. But for us blindies out there, wow it really is a whole new world. I feel like I have contacts in… except I see better than with my contacts. A friend who’s had the surgery said there are 2 surgeries he’d recommend to anyone – Lasik and… well ask his wife what the 2nd surgery he’d recommend is… ;)

Bye bye 4 eyes!

June 27th, 2011

I have had glasses since I was 8 years old. My Pops has glasses, my sisters have glasses, most of my relatives have glasses… Thanks to my awesome gene pool, glasses were inevitable for me.

I started out with the huge janky glasses that took up half my face (realizing now this might have contributed to my “uncool” status in middle school…).

I finally was allowed to get contacts when I turned 14, and oh the world was beautiful again! I could SEE! I remember leaving the Optometrists office wearing my new eyeballs and proclaiming to my Mom (who had perfect vision… unfair, right!) that I could finally see what she sees and not behind any coke bottle lenses.

However, the novelty of contacts shortly wore off. When I realized they left me with dry eyes, and they stung when I got sweaty or swam. That they’d occasionally fall behind my eyeball and I’d have to dig around my eye to find them. And then I had to start paying for them and realized vision insurance and changing your lenses every 2 weeks was not as fun as I thought. However, I’d already tasted the sweet freedom of not having 4 eyes, and I swore I’d never go back to glasses full time.

Plus a couple bouts of cheapy, ugly glasses from Walmart renewed my vow to wear those stupid contacts until they became another layer of my eyeball. I wouldn’t be caught dead in those frames! But then I got some cute hip specs and was more apt to allowing the public to see me in them, however my love for contacts was still greater than my love for hip specs. I mean, they were cute and all but I still didn’t have the clip on sunglass frames, and how in the WORLD am I going to survive California sun sans clip on sunglasses? So my love-hate relationship with my contacts continued. I wore my contacts until my eyes hurt but I was able to wear my sunnies. Muy importante in the land of the sun 360 days a year.

But… my relationship with my bad eyes is coming to an end. I’m taking the plunge. Today I am getting my eyeballs cut out and replaced for a spry young pair. Today is the last day I’ll have bad vision. Today is the last day of a 2 week pre-op prep of me having to wear my cute hip specs (which are becoming WAY less cute the more I wear them… imagine running and working out with those bad boys bouncing all over my face) Lasik it is, baby! The Mister got his done a couple months ago and has absolutely LOVED it. And he can see! I’m a little nervous about today… I mean, you only have one pair of eyes. They screw those up = they screw me up = me sans job, sans running, sans driving, etc. But they’re going to give me a couple Xanax and I think I’l be coo (but I’m pretty high anxiety so I’m hoping they give me a few more Xanax…)

So the surgery itself is apparently cake walk – takes like 20 minutes and you go home, pop some more Xanax and sleep. However, I realize I’m too vain for this because for another week post-op I can’t work out or wear makeup. So if you see that frumpy sweats lady wearing sunglasses inside, that’s probably me hiding my atrophying body and sun damaged face. In fact never mind, you won’t see me that week post-op. I’m going to be really busy with uh… laundry and things, washing my hair, ya know.

So are there any blind people out there who want a pair of cute specs with a prescription of “almost legally blind?”

The fame

April 19th, 2011

I have some pretty awesome friends. They’re pretty AND they’re awesome. I’m the luckiest.

One of my pretty, awesome friends, Lisa got us tickets to the ELLEN show and we’re heading up to LA to celeb-stalk and hope for our 15 minutes of fame as Ellen’s camera guy pans over us in the audience.

IMG_5155

I’m super pumped, one cuz Ellen is hilarious. It’s been said, “Oprah will make you cry, Ellen will make you laugh.” Plus I hear she gives away pretty sweet loot. AND I’m gonna be on tv! This is almost better than my run in with Ry Ry!

At first I was a little worried about the timing of it cuz it’s in the middle of the week and it’s an ALL day thing plus I had a big test on Thursday, but my teacher must’ve known I was going to be stalking celebs, so she moved the test to the following week!

We won’t know who the guests are until Wednesday and it won’t be shown until Thurs, but keep your tvs tuned in Thursday at 4pm on Channel 4 (NBC) or if you’re my Mamma, tune in to channel 4 (WDIV) at 10am.

…Now I just need to figure out what to wear…
