I took care of an adorable teenage boy yesterday at work, the kind all the girls would have swooned over when I was in high school. He was polite and athletic and funny, and just adorable. Turns out, all the girls swoon over him in his high school too, and he looooooved it.
I was sitting right outside his room charting, and was able to get a front row seat of the show:
Teenage boy’s current girlfriend was visiting him with a few of their other friends and one of the friends says, “Oh crap, they’re on their way up.” At these words, current girlfriend starts to freak out and is looking all over for a way out. She leaves his room quickly, turning left and almost sprints down the hall. Just as she’s leaving, EX-Girlfriend comes sauntering her little self up from the right side and enters the room.
Now I watch teenage boy and ex-girlfriend get all flirty and cutesy (um what? don’t you have a girlfriend?). Current girlfriend returns and sheepishly approaches teenage boy’s room again, but ex girlfriend sees her, slams the door shut and does a cheeky little wave to her through the window. Current girlfriend storms off again crying. I overhear ex-girlfriend telling teenage boy, “I don’t even know why you’re with that *!#$*%, I’m going to beat the *&^%!@ out of her!”
One of the other friends goes to comfort current girlfriend and brings her back to teenage boy’s room where ex-girlfriend has plopped her tiny little booty all close to teenage boy on his bed. Current girlfriend is nervous when she goes back into the room, looking at her feet the whole time and not making eye contact with ex-girlfriend. Ex-girlfriend is staring intently at current girlfriend, looking so smug and with a “Dare you to say something” look on her face. Current girlfriend goes to the other corner of the room and keeps herself busy with the other friends.
All the while teenage boy is looking between the two and has a huge grin on his face. Either he had no idea what little soap opera had just gone down, or (more likely…) he was soaking it all up, loving every minute of the cat fight over him.
In my front row view of the show and the commentary (another co-worker working with teenage boy also loves the drama and went and got the scoop, and therefore was able to place the roles of each character), I found the whole thing hilarious and entertaining. But my one thought was, WHY was current girlfriend so intimidated by ex-girlfriend? She’s the one who lost out, and current girlfriend is the one who got him! And WHY didn’t she stand up for herself and her man instead of allowing ex-girlfriend to be in the room and canoodle with HER MAN?!
Oh those tumultuous teenage years…
